Information & Policies for Canine Good Citizen Class

- Our Canine Good Citizen class is open to dog of all breeds (and mixes) who have had some
previous training such as our Basic Manners class, private in-home training, or an equivalent group
class at another school.  Dogs with aggression issues MUST be evaluated prior to joining class (see
last item below).

- Dogs of any age can join this class, however in our experience it can sometimes be bit a challenging
for puppies fresh from Puppy Kindergarten.  We usually suggest Basic Manners as an in-between
step.
Click here for more information about the CGC test.

- 15 minutes prior to the start of class is "dog socializing time".  Dogs must remain on leash unless
the Instructor specifically says otherwise.

- Taking this class is not a automatic guarantee your dog will pass the CGC test on Graduation Night.
The class will prepare you for the test - you must practice and train your dog between classes!

- Dogs ages 5 months and older should be vaccinated per your veterinarian's recommendations and
must have a current rabies vaccination.  Owners must provide us with a copy of their dog's
vaccinations for our records on the first night of class.  Dogs must be free of internal parasites.
Although not required, we recommend your dog is on some form of flea/tick prevention.

- Puppies 5 months and younger should have had at least 2 rounds of vaccinations before attending
class or a letter from your veterinarian stating it is okay for your puppy to attend class.  Puppies
attending an outdoor class must have a current rabies vaccination.

- Dogs attend all 6 classes.  There is no Orientation Night as in our Basic Manners class.

- Female dogs in heat may not attend class.

- Everyone who lives with the dog is encouraged to attend class!  Children ages 6 and older are
welcome to attend class with their family.  Children 12 years and older are welcome to handle the
dog (if physically able).  We ask that younger children remain seated during class and not walk
across the training area.  Children should also be aware of dog safety and understand that not all dogs
may be used to or comfortable around children.  Please remind your children to always ask
permission to pet someone else's dog!

- Your dog should be a wearing a regular buckle collar or a
Martingale style collar.  Please have
your dog on a 4' or 6' nylon or leather leash.  Your dog must be on leash at all times unless your
Instructor gives the okay to drop leashes.  Flexi-Leads, choke chain collars, prong collars, and
electronic shock collars are not permitted in class.

- Please remember to bring ample poop bags to clean up after your dog when necessary.

- We will provide fresh water for the dogs in a "community" bowl.  You are more than welcome than
to bring your own bowl/water for your dog.

- Bring a selection of tiny easy-to-swallow treats to reward your dog with.  Suggestions are Natural
Balance or Pet Botanics treat rolls, sliced hot dogs, string cheese, beef jerky for dogs, or chewy
commercial dog treats such as Pupperoni or Beggin' Strips.  If your dog has any food allergies or is
on a special diet due to a medical condition, please talk to your veterinarian and ask him/her to
suggest an appropriate treat for your dog.

- Dogs in this class must be friendly toward people and other dogs (hence the idea of a "Good
Citizen").  If we determine your dog would be better suited to private training sessions, we will
excuse your dog and the remaining class fee may be applied to a private session.
